Former S.D. Gov. and U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow (R-S.D.)On this date, December 8, 2003, Former Governor and U.S. Representative Bill Janklow was convicted of second degree manslaughter from an August 16, 2003 motorcycle accident. Motorcyclist Randy Scott of Minnesota was killed in the accident.

Following his conviction, Janklow announced he would resign from the House on January 20, 2004 ; a special election was held on June 1 to fill the vacant seat. Stephanie Herseth (D) defeated state Sen. Larry Diedrich(R) in a close election by 51-49 percent.
